You’ve all heard the popular phrase, “fashionably late.” In my house there is nothing fashionable about keeping people waiting around until you decide it’s time to grace them with your presence. It’s just not cool. It’s rude.
Growing up my dad was adamant about punctuality as a family value. If my brother and I weren’t ready 15 minutes before the time he said we were going he would leave without us, and there were times he did! While that may seem extreme, it was effective. We were on time. Always.
Punctuality almost seems like a lost art. It’s time to bring this important value back to the forefront.

4 Reasons to be Fashionably Punctual
You’ll get to scope out the scene
Showing up on time or even a little early affords you the opportunity to get settled, find a table, grab a prime parking spot, etc. If you’re running late you’ll be too frazzled to do any of these things.
You have time to collect yourself
Since my first job in high school I always arrived at work a few minutes early to get my head in the game by taking a quick breather before jumping in full speed ahead. When you’re not in a rush you’re more relaxed and able to enjoy the activity you’re about to engage in. It’s starts everything off on a good note.
It Builds Trust
Someone who is consistently punctual is someone I know I can count on. No one wants a flaky friend – that person who cancels at the last minute or waits until the eleventh hour to confirm plans. Showing up late on a consistent basis falls into the same category. Be the friend that is reliable. Showing respect for other people’s time builds trust in the relationship.
It Demonstrates Responsibility
Being on time shows your level of responsibility in your career as well as your personal life. I hate to admit it but when someone shows up to a job interview seconds before the agreed upon time or *gasp late without any explanation, they’ve already got a strike against them. Maybe that’s unfair but there are a lot of employers who I know feel the same. Tardiness shows that you can’t plan your time effectively.
