Our family is about to embark on an epic road trip. By the end of the summer we’ll have clocked in over 41 hours on the road with a 5 year old in tow. I knew I had to be creative, and find things that he could do independently, especially on the trips I’m driving with him on my own.
I hit up almost every store I could think of in search of fun activities he could keep himself occupied with. This is the best of the bunch! I will be sure to let you know how it goes!

Road Trip Activities for the Whole Family
I love these books! It’s like a sticker book and matching game all in one! Each of the stickers matches a picture found somewhere in the book. Your little one’s job is to find the correct page for each sticker. As an added bonus the stickers are reusable! My son will easily play with this for an hour and gets so excited when he finds a match!

Crayola Stow & Go Studio
You’ve probably seen the color wonder coloring books in every grocery/drug/craft store you’ve visited as of late. It has the clear markers that *magically* turn to color as they hit the special pages. Now it comes in a handy travel case with pages, markers and all. And if the markers happen to drop in the car you don’t have to worry about leaving multi-colored streaks all over your seats!
Dry Erase Travel Pack
Another fun coloring option with dry erase markers. Play “guess that picture” and then wipe the slate clean! Have your kids draw personal portraits of all of the family members in the car. Have them sketch the passing landmarks that you spot along your journey. It’ll surely pass the time quickly for the whole family!
Magnetic Curious George
Magnets are one of my personal favorite travel activities. This one has a number of characters that you can insert and move around to create new scenes. Have fun with your favorite tv characters and get the kids to narrate a story to go along with it!
Pretty much the ultimate travel game for the whole family. It’s got loads of items you have to try to spot as you travel from place to place. Added to the fun is wild cards and funny gestures to try to catch the attention of other family members in the car. Best for older kids but younger ones could play with a little help!
Where’s Waldo Books
Relive a part of your childhood along with your kids. They’ll be so busy finding out red and white striped shirt friend that they will look track of time completely. Make a friendly competition out of it and see who can find him the fastest!
Snakes and Ladders Travel Game – Magnetic
Your favorite game in a magnetic travel pack. If your family is full of board game fanatics like mine – this is sure to be a hit! It’s small enough to throw in your bag and whip out whenever the kids are getting antsy.
